Explore the History of Quilts

Quilting has a rich and diverse history that extends across cultures and centuries.

Quilts served as a form of communication and resistance among enslaved African-Americans in the United States. The Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses used by enslaved people to escape to free states and Canada, used quilts as signals and markers to guide fleeing individuals to safety. The Quilt Code provided certain quilt patterns and symbols, such as the "Monkey Wrench" or "Log Cabin," to convey messages about safe routes, danger, or instructions for the journey ahead.
